Something to Look Forward To - 2 Beach Vacations

This is definitely the time of year when I start to dream about a warm beach vacation. Summer feels like a distant memory. You begin to forget what being warm felt like.

To help ourselves mentally, we typically book our condo some time during January. This gives us something to look forward to and also ensures the time slot we want. Christmas came a bit early for me this year though. It looks like 2010 may include not one, but two beach trips for us!

Some good friends have decided to get married just after Christmas next year. Even better, it’s a beach wedding in Progreso, Mexico. Now, granted I hate to fly, but I think it’ll be worth it. It’s been three years since my last flight, so I think I have sufficiently recovered. The last trip that required flying was the catalyst that got me to go to the doctor and talk about optional medication to help me manage. I will never fly without taking something now. In fact, my husband probably will not allow me to fly without taking something!

So, I am already mentally preparing for a flight, but I am trying to keep the bigger picture in mind – the beach. I had never heard of Progreso, so I looked it up. It’s a bustling port city in the Yucatan situated on the Gulf of Mexico. It’s about a half hour drive from Merida. There is shopping and dining of course. They also have tourist attractions such as an ecological preserve and Maya archeological sites. Oh, and then there’s the beach. Now it’s time to start saving.

  2. Allie at least I have a full year to prepare myself!!! The beach part will make it all worth it too I'm sure. It'll be fun to visit a new beach destination.

  3. Two trips to the beach sounds wonderful. Especially now when I am all bundled up when I leave the house.

Sorry to hear you don't like flying. I don't think most people are thrilled with the idea of flying, you aren't alone.

  4. Alicia the idea of putting on a bikini right now is just downright frightening. Not sure how it'll work out this time next year. May have to invest in some of the spray on tanning sessions!!

It's weird about my flying thing, it's not even about crashing. It's part claustrophobia, I also get air sick, and I just feel plain trapped. I get really anxious in large groups, so all the lines and being crammed in close is just overwhelming.

  5. Heather,

Spray tan is a great idea.

I don't have any suggestions on the crowds, but you could carry some candied ginger for the motion sickness. Or even just regular sliced ginger to put in your tea during the flight. Ginger helps settle my husband's stomach when the meds cause GI disturbance.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
