Conquering My Fear of Cycling

Six Miles & Pool Time This weekend was a good one all the way around. Saturday morning I got in a pretty good 6 mile run but the heat did a number on me big time. I should have stuck with my planned 5 miles or taken a GU at 4 miles. I normally take one around 6 miles into an 8+ mile run. So I didn't even think about needing it for 6 miles.  During the run I was ok. I did finish all of my 20 oz bottle of water by mile 5 though. Right after my run I felt fine. I stretched and rolled. Used a cooling towel to bring my body temp down and took a cold shower. But then it hit me hard. That icky nauseous feeling that signals that I need to get in electrolytes fast. It's not about food, it's not about carbs, proteins, etc. So I had some Gatorade (which I actually can't stand) but it really helped. So that headache and nausea finally dissipated so I felt human again. Luckily, the only other thing I had planned for the day was spending time in the pool with frien...

New Kickboxing DVD, Running & Lounging

Running & Lounging  It's been a fairly low-key weekend for us. It's almost too hot to even be in the pool to be honest. When the temps are in the triple digits, it's really hard to want to do much of anything other than sit inside with the AC on and fans blowing. Saturday morning, I got up to get in a 4.5 mile run. It was 80 degrees already at 7:15. There was no luxury of sitting around, enjoying breakfast. If I wanted to run, I had to get moving. I had planned to go fairly slow. But ended  up averaging a 9:11 pace. I told Jason I must have been trying to run from the heat. After the run, I decided to run a few errands while Jason went cycling with a friend. Afterwards, our friends came by for some much-needed pool time. I actually ended up having to add in extra water to try to cool the pool down. 104 in the shade Frozen strawberry daiquiris were a nice, cold treat. Jason and I discovered that all you have to do is blend strawberries with ice and vanilla r...

Leaving the Beach & 8's

Leaving the Beach Our last night at the beach was spent in the company of amazing friends (and hosts). Our friends that have a house on the intracoastal waters (mentioned in previous post) have been talking about a place called Joe Patti's Seafood for ages. So, the plan for Friday afternoon was to head over to their house then head over to Joe Patti's. Of course, the seafood part wasn't exactly appealing to me, but that's ok. I was along for the experience. The smell was really over-powering for me. But, they had several different areas other than just the fish market. So I milled around checking out a variety of sauces, salsas, condiments and more. Some made there, some made in the area, others were known brands. But I love sauces and condiments, spreads and salads. So it was fun for me looking through, getting recipe ideas. Joe Patti's also has a really nice wine store. They definitely carried many wines that we can't get at home. Jason picked out a re...

Super Saturday and Lazy but Productive Sunday

Super Saturday Well, yesterday was just an amazing day. Sarah got here just after 1. We ran a few errands before hitting the pool. Some friends came over to join us so it was a Saturday Pool Party kind of day. And you know what, I absolutely disconnected. After I did my blog post, I put the laptop away. Period. Done. Even more...after everyone got to the house, I left my phone in my purse. No checking emails, checking to see who had posted a new blog post, no Facebook or Twitter. Nothing. I lived in real life and enjoyed ever single moment. Don't get me wrong, I love blogging and love the constant interaction. But there was a time when I didn't spend half the weekend checking the computer. It never was turned on. I think it's good for the soul to remember that. To remember to just enjoy the here and now before it's gone. The plan was Pizza Saturday. I started the dough for our pizza (as in me and Jason) and then got Sarah's socca pizza going. Our friends deci...

9 Humid Miles and GU Brew to the Rescue

Seitan Wraps for Friday Last night we had a good time meeting up with some friends for happy hour. We just visited and caught up for a few hours. A nice way to unwind after a really long week. Normally we would have gone home and made pizza for Pizza Friday. But my sister is coming up today and has requested pizza for dinner. I can definitely forgo Pizza Friday for Pizza Saturday with Sis ;-) Instead of pizza, I had made up some Blackened Seitan before we had left for happy hour. I used that in whole-grain lavash wraps for a really tasty Blackened Seitan Wrap with baked sweet potato fries. While I do love my pizza, it was sort of a nice change. Plus, my second love is sweet potato fries. 9-Miles This morning I was up really early for a Saturday thanks to Maddie's antics. She started banging around in the kennel around 6. I finally decided to go ahead and get up at 6:20. I was planning on running anyway, and I knew I should get started sooner than later because of the tem...

Saturday Recap & Lazy Sunday

Saturday Recap Wow, yesterday was kind of nuts, but so worth it. As I mentioned, it started off with an 8-mile run (so proud to hit that mileage again). Then it was a rush to get myself ready to head out for the lake. Yes, I had to shower before going to the lake - encrusted in salt and grime from the run. Ick. We got to the lake around 9:45 and pretty much immediately headed out on the boat. A and C couldn't wait to go "monster" tubing with Uncle Jason. He's such a trooper to take them out.   This year he talked to them about needing to practice falling out of the tube so they would be prepared in case they ever bounce out. To our utter shock, A and C both jumped out of the moving tube! Even more shocking, they came up laughing asking to do it again. I think Jason created monsters ;-)    We finally convinced the kids that they needed to take turns - in other words, let other people get out there and do something like ski. I will say, skiing after a long run ...

Pool Time Recap & Layered Black Bean & Pineapple Salsa Dip

Pool Time Recap Yesterday we had a fabulous afternoon with some of our friends. We mostly just lounged in the pool all afternoon. Then we decided we were water logged so we snacked on some of this. It's hard to beat lots of fresh fruit on a hot summer day. The Black Bean & Corn Salsa and Kalamata Hummus were a big hit too, along with the Peanut Butter Cranberry Cookie Balls . Gym Time This morning I really had to fight off the urge to run rather than hit the gym. We had a front move through so it was only about 71 degrees at 7:30. But, I knew I really needed to hit the gym instead of trying another run. So, I procrastinated for a bit before making my way to the gym for shoulders, legs, and abs. I started with 10 minutes on the elliptical then did shoulders and legs as supersets of 3x8 unless noted. SS#1 Shoulder press Alternating rear lunges SS#2 Upright rows Plie with low-end pulse SS#3 Lateral raise Squats SS#4 Rear leg elevated lunges Calf r...
