Super Workout, Super Saturday

Friday Recap
Surprise surprise, Friday ended up being Pizza night at the Iacobacci-Miller household. No complaints from this gal though. It was yummy. We played a few rounds of pool while the pizza cooked, then ate and watched Julie and Julia, well, most of it. We sort of pooped out and have 30 minutes left to finish.

Superwoman Workout
Today I did chest, back, shoulders this morning using a drop set method. I did each exercise using the same weight, but dropping the number of reps with each set: 12, 10, 8, 6. This is the same set up as last week, but I did increase my weights for all exercises.

Chest
Flat bench flyes
Flat bench DB presss
Incline flyes
Incline DB press

Back
Double-arm row (flat back)
Pullovers
Underhand DB rows

Shoulders
Standing DB press
Side lateral raises
Rear delt press

After weights, I did Shock Cardio HIIT 40/20 then the weights only portion of Weights & Plates abs from Abs Circuit. I felt really good today, most likely because I behaved and took a rest day yesterday.

Saturday = Errand Day
After working out, we had lots of errands to run. It was grocery day, plus Jason wanted to pick up some heavier dumbbells (who am I to argue with that request), a relaxing lunch at a restaurant with a patio, and then Home Depot for some plants. It was warm and sunny today so the urge to get some yard work accomplished was definitely present. They didn't have all of the veggies or plants/flowers, but I definitely have a good start now. I usually grow Roma tomatoes, Japanese eggplant, red and yellow bell peppers, jalapenos, habaneros, and herbs. We used to grow fantastic squash and zucchini until our soil was invaded by squash borers that we have been unable to get rid of. I also got plants for many of my planters around the patio and on the fence. Definitely makes the yard feel more like spring with the additional color.

I love being able to step outside and grab makings for dinner. Do you like to garden? What veggies do you grow?

Simple, Easy Dinner
Speaking of dinner, we sort of let the time slip past us while working in the yard. So we opted for a quick, easy dinner tonight: Roasted Poblano Black Bean Burgers with baked sweet potato "fries." I didn't have any pineapple salsa tonight so I just opted to top them with my favorite veggie burger toppings: spinach, roasted red bell peppers, and mozzarella.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

  1. Heather, I love your pictures...PLEASE make them bigger! Like, poster-size! It is a shame they are so teeny, because they seriously make me drool!

I do not like to garden...I'm simply too irresponsible!

  2. Heather,

I love that you guys have pizza Friday. We used to have sushi Friday until I got tired of making it. It is nice to not have to think too much about dinner one night a week. ;-) I need to get back to that soon. Thanks for the push.

Taking a day off always makes the next workout that much better. The same thing happens for me.

I also garden but don't do many veggies, mostly herbs. We always have the following: rosemary, chives, mint, sage (2 types), thyme (3 types), oregano (2 types), dill, parsley, cilantro, basil, tarragon, fennel (for the pollen and seeds) and lavender. I also grow lettuce and something else to be determined (last year it was purple Roman peppers). As you can see it is mostly herbs at our house.

Sounds like a great Saturday! I hope your Sunday is just as good.

  3. Sophia @ Burp and Slurp I highly doubt that you're irresponsible! Thanks for the comment on my pictures!

Alicia @ Vegan Epicurean I think it's sort of fun to have a themed night for dinner. Definitely takes the guess work out of dinner plans! LOL. I would love to grow more herbs, but for some reason I have a very difficult time with them unless they're fairly hardy. I guess my green thumb only goes so far.

  5. I honestly didn't really like Julie and Julia. I thought it was REALLY boring. Definitely wish I was Julie though---what a fun life she leads now! :)

  6. Hey Fit Lizzio ! Yep, good workout day all the way around. Amazing what a rest day can do for the body.

Lisa @ I'm an Okie I could see how it could get a wee bit drawn out! I guess I didn't know what to even expect at all. We really enjoyed it. Of course, it did take us 2 days to watch LOL!

  8. Hey Jenna @ Healthy. Happy. Well. It's so worth the effort to spend time making up a large batch and freezing. I really liked the roasted poblano flavor in these!

Mid-Week Mix-Up - Disconnecting to Reconnect

Another Double Workout This morning I got up when Jason got up to go to swim. The plan was to do Cathe's MMA Kickboxing DVD then do back and triceps at lunch or after work. I really needed a day off from running - I had run 5 days straight. And wouldn't you know it that my cross-training day also happens to be the first morning in months that it was in the low 60's. Really? Talk about bad timing. I almost feel like I let the universe down by not taking advantage of the crazy cool temps. And of course they go right back up the rest of the week. Humph.... But, I listened to my body, my feet, my piriformis...all telling me to not run. So, I didn't. I did my kickboxing workout (sulking just a bit I won't lie). But it was a good way to "kick" off the morning. During lunch, I ran home to get in my back and triceps weights done. I went with my same back and triceps workout as last week. No gym means no assisted pullups or barbell rows. So, I do worry a bit

Workout Wednesday - Body Blaster Tabata

Happy Hump Day! I wanted to thank everyone for their comments on yesterday's post: Be Kinder to Your Body. Calories are Not the Enemy . It sounds like it resonated with many of you. Today I wanted to share a new workout with you. I've been working on interval workouts for some of my clients. I try to give them the most bang for their buck (time). I know that in an ideal world, we would all have time to do longer workouts. There would never be scheduling conflicts, sick husbands or kids, or sick us. In reality, workouts need to be effective and efficient. And they don't have to be lengthy to be effective and efficient either. There's no need to spend hours in a gym to get in a good workout. Interval workouts like HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) or tabata, or even interval running are great ways to get in a fantastic workout in a short amount of time and have many benefits. You can read more about Tabata workouts  here . The benefits of this type of work
