Weights, Cardio, Pool, Refrigerator Special

Home Sweet Home
So while I am totally missing the beach, I think I had one of the best night's sleep last night. There is nothing like sleeping in your own bed after being away for a week. It was also nice to be back in my own kitchen where the knives are sharp, the pans are the ones I want, and I have access to all of my spices. There is truly nothing like being home. Now if I could just manage to make my home on the beach, I'd be one perfectly content gal!
Back to the Weights
Today I was eager to hit the weights again. I really missed being able to do a weight workout on vacation. I am undecided on a rotation so I just sort of winged it and have decided to try this split for 2 weeks at least. Today I worked upper body push muscles using a 6:2 count (e.g., chest press: 6 up, 2 down). I did 3 sets of 8 reps of the following:

Chest:
Chest press
Chest flye
Incline chest press

Shoulders:
Shoulder press
Lateral raise
Rear delt flye

Triceps:
Overhead extension
Double-arm kickbacks
Lying dumbbell extensions

I followed the weights with a 30-minute step workout from Step Blast then a stretch. I'll just say once more, it felt so good to hit the weights again. I'll do legs tomorrow then upper body pull on Monday (biceps and back).

Being Lazy Means Slim Pickings for Dinner
After my workouts, I made a quick lunch, swiffer vacuumed the floors (hello doggy dust bunnies), dusted, and changed over laundry. I figured that earned me some pool time. Now, I should have gone to the grocery store or Whole Foods at the very least. But, in the end, I opted for reading and lounging outside. I'm still on vacation after all!

Since I didn't make it to the store, dinner was one of those "use what you have" affairs. I had new potatoes, so those went on the grill as it's way too hot to heat up the kitchen with the oven. I did a very quick steam on the remaining green beans we brought back with us from FL. I diced those along with red onion and red bell pepper and tossed with chickpeas and herbs for a quick Green Bean Salad. I had a few Quorn patties in the freezer that I nuked and topped with a sauce I made from a jar of Artichoke and Piquillo Pepper Bruschetta I had on hand. I just added a bit of white wine to it and heated it on the stove.

I know this doesn't seem like a total refrigerator special, but for me it kind of was. Amazing how that sort of thing changes isn't it. What's your "refrigerator special?"

I usually have sweet potatoes on hand, so I often cook one in the oven or microwave for a quick and easy dinner. Then I'll add toppings - yogurt or cheese, beans, salsa, or anything else I'm in the mood for. I'll add some bread, crackers, or tortilla chips on the side, plus some raw veggies, and it's an easy meal.

i love being on vacay but i'm too much of a routine freak so i love doing my regular workouts so it feels good to be home. and yes, i love sleeping in my own bed but it sucks to have to make it now, whereas i never make my bed at the hotel.

  4. Welcome back, Heather! We usually have some sort of beans in the cupboards, so bean burritos are common when we haven't been shopping. :)

  5. I am glad you got a chance to workout at home. I know that must feel so good.

What is in my refrigerator changes all the time so I don't have anything that I make routinely. But If I had to pick one thing it would probably be lightly cooked veggies with a peanut sauce over a whole grain.

    talk to you later,
    Ali

  13. Kristen @ Swanky Dietitian Thanks! Trying to enjoy every last second ;-)

Lisa @ Lisa's Foods on the Move I always try to have sweet potatoes too, just didn't have much after vacation though. Not even a bag of frozen veggies. Talk about sad LOL

Jessica @ Living in the Kitchen, Gym and Mall I'm very much a routine kind of person too. But I do try to relax the routine just a wee bit on vacation - as much as possible for me anyway.

Eunice @ Food 4 Fitness Burritos would have been a good idea!

Alicia @ Vegan Epicurean You're always great with your variety of sauces though! I tend to forget about peanut sauces unless I'm specifically making a recipe.

Nicci @ Nifty Eats Thank you ma'am!

Frosty Duncan @ Hope in a Basket Thanks so much for stopping by. It was a nice summer-type of salad.

Averie @ Loves Veggies and Yoga Yep, own bed, own pillows, own sheets....love it.

Joanna Sutter @ Fitness & Spice I know - reality kind of stinks LOL!

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
