DOMS, Running, Indulging

More Blahs
Well, I wanted to start by thanking everyone for their concern and well-wishes about my blue day. I won't lie and say that I'm all 100% smiles and skipping about airily today either. At the same time, I am trying not to dwell on it and keep on moving forward. Wallowing does me no good.

We've actually had some rainy, gloomy weather here, so that probably isn't helping. But, I know that the key (for me) is to keep finding the positives and to stay active. I have so much to be thankful for and exercise helps give me energy and keeps me from being idle and thinking....thinking...thinking.

When you feel down, how do you cope?

DOMS and 5-Mile Run
This morning I didn't bounce out of bed for a run like I had hoped. Though, I was awake again at 5:27 on the dot. I wish I would have gone at that time, it was only 70 degrees. I can't recall the last time it was 70 degrees! But my legs were feeling super heavy from yesterday's workout - hello DOMS.

I did end up getting in a 5-mile run later though. Despite the DOMS, the heat and major humidity (I was praying for the sky to open up and rain), it was a pretty good run actually. Initially, it helped to loosen up my legs. Though, I'll admit that they ended up really tight by the end. I know that I was mostly pounding out frustrations and that carried me along. In hindsight, 5 miles after a heavy leg day was probably not my most brilliant move. I also did an abs workout from Cathe Friedrich's Abs Circuit along with a really long stretch for the legs.

Chores and Indulging
After some chores (laundry, sweeping downstairs, swiffering downstairs, and mopping the kitchen), I decided I had earned an Epsom salt bath. My original plan was to indulge with a glass of wine, but I went upstairs, started the bath, washed my face, and forgot the wine. I don't know why I think of a bath as a luxury. I work hard and should really take Epsom salt baths more frequently.

Are you a frequent bath taker or do you view them as an indulgence (with or without the wine)?

Another indulgence that I am allowing for myself...no cooking. I have no idea what I or we will be eating for dinner, but I am not cooking. Done, said it. Oh, and I am already feeling guilty for bowing out.

Sorry for the photo-free, recipe-free blog post. I'm sure I'll make up for it soon enough ;-)

Sending you more ((hugs)) girl!! I SOOOO know how those blues can be...and all that thinking, thinking, and re-thinking. It's no fun at all. I have such a hard time snapping out of that funk lately too -clearly no advice over here, overthinking ollie that I am and all! BUT at least you got in an amazing run, took a bath and are NOT cooking tonight. I think that's pretty awesome if I do say so myself. :-)

  2. I am with you on the blues. My husband and I are really trying to keep our spirits up, but it is getting to both of us right now! Keep your chin up Heather. The bath is a great idea. I love Epsom Salt baths and I don't take them enough. You always feel so much better after them too. And yes, they are an indulgence because it is time that I feel like I should be doing something else! To make you feel better...I didn't cook either at all today! Enjoy some rest tonight!

  3. I am so sorry you are feeling blue again. Nothing serious I hope.

When I get overwhelmed, which you know happens, I try to focus on what I can do not what I can't do. Being active and doing something to resolve the issue that has me down always helps me. You are right that thinking about the problem and wallowing never did anyone any good.

I take a bath every single day, though without the wine. It is my nightly indulgence. It always loosens up my muscles and it just feels good. I highly recommend it. Add a glass and vino and a hot bath is even better. ;-)

    hugs,
    Ali

  6. I hate the blues but we all have them! We can't always be puppies and kittens, can we? ;-) And damn, you forgot the wine! The most important part! hehe.

  7. Lady, I'm right there with ya today. I had nothing but errands, chores, and non-stop work to do! UGH. Whenever I'm feeling down, I tend to have a pity party for myself. So now, when I feel blue, I call my Mom, who always reminds me that she "will not be attending my pity party--because there's no food, no booze, and no music at those kinds of parties!" lol.

    Wine + Bath + Rest = mood healing :)

  8. I'm definitely not a frequent bath taker in the summer - the winter though is an entirelyyy different story. I'm always cold and they just warm me right up, plus they're so relaxing! And I'm glad you're starting to feel better (:

I never take a bath for environmental reasons.
I admire you so much for your dedication to exercise.

  15. Honestly, blogging helps me when I'm done. Seeing people give a damn about what I blab about and supporting me lift me up. But who says you need to be all smiles all the time. Honor your moodiness, it will pass. dont try to fight it. Just get some good chocolate to indulge in, that cure almost ANYTHING.
For the record, I think your, funny, beautiful, intelligent, and genuine. so smile about that!

  16. I always seem to hit a mid-summer slump around this time...getting out with friends tends to help me! Hope you feel better soon, girl!

  17. Jolene @ To Be Determined Puppies and kittens sure are nicer though aren't they! I know - maybe I need a mini fridge in the bathroom like a luxury hotel ;-)

Laura @ B Foxy Fitness Mom's are great for setting you straight aren't they! I like her reasoning for ditching pity parties.

Alycia @ Fit n Fresh Thanks girl! Baths are less appealing when it's 100 degrees out...

Holly @ Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices Thanks so much sweetie!

Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel Thanks girl - hope your workout is better tomorrow. Let me know how you're feeling

Lindsay @ Cotter Crunch I can't imagine an ice bath. That's probably what the legs really needed, but I think I'll stick with my Epsom salt. You must try one!

Averie @ Loves Veggies and Yoga Hugs right back!

Sarah @ Run Sarah They are relaxing and not just when you've worked out hard.

    Greek Yogurt Thank you!

Eden's Eats I agree with you on the blogging. I was shocked the first time I realized people were indeed reading mine LOL. Thanks so much - that means a lot!

Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg It just doesn't seem right - summer blues. Winter blues make so much more since. It's like getting a cold in the summer, just not right.

  20. I feel like this week has been nothing but funky for everyone, hang in there!

I hate baths, is that nuts as a woman? I get bored. Again, in comes by OCD.

  21. Kelly @ Healthy Living with Kelly It's kind of sad really isn't it??? LOL

Kat @ Bubble Gum Gym Kat I used to take baths after dance rehearsals all the time. I don't know why I don't equate working out (especially weights) on the same level of being deserving of a soak.

Nichole @ Live for the Run Oh thank you for saying that. I get bored too. My husband thinks I don't ever take long enough bathes and it's because I just get tired of sitting there.

  22. just commented twice and google sign-in messed me up.....

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
