Spinning & Stir Fry

Spinning on Wednesday
This morning Jason was getting up at 5 am to go to his swim class. I thought I was going to get up and do Step Blast and abs. Thought is the key word friends. I rolled over and went right back to sleep. I was not going to force the workout this morning. I was even prepared to proclaim today my rest day if need be.

The weather is cooling down nicely finally. So I thought I'd be up and out for morning runs, but I just haven't felt up for a run the past few days. I think the temps are supposed to remain just at 90 through the weekend (into the upper 60's at night) so maybe we can get in a longer run this weekend finally.

Before I went up to bed last night, Jason had mentioned wanting to go to spin again today. So instead of step or running or weights after work (or a rest day), I decided to go with Jason and try out the the new spin class at our gym: Group Ride. He's been twice and enjoyed it. Since I've been doing legs twice a week, they've been more sore than not, and sore legs are not conducive to a "fun" spin class. But, this week I'm only doing legs once, so I thought it might be fun to do something I haven't done in ages (besides just setting foot in my gym).

I must say that I did enjoy this new spin format so much more than what was previously being done. I think the only downfall is that it is the same class and same music for a certain number of weeks.

Super Simple & Super Fast

I will say that I was feeling a tiny bit more like myself today. Still not 100%, but getting there. I just keep staring at the gorgeous flowers on my desk and reminding myself of the many many good things in my life.

One good thing is a fast dinner after a later workout. The spin class is 5:30 - 6:30 pm. I know that's not really and truly late, but when I do an afternoon workout it's usually 4:15 - 5:15-ish. So 6:30 is late for me, especially for starting dinner. I knew I was going to be one hungry lady. A hungry Heather is not a happy Heather either. So, I knew dinner had to be super fast and super simple. I had plenty of rice leftover from Monday's dinner, so what's super fast to make and goes best on rice? Stir fry of course.

This was nothing fancy. I used an (ahem) pre-made stir fry sauce that I jazzed up with a teeny bit of tahini and hoisin (sorry, sometimes I go the semi-homemade route), bag of mixed frozen veggies, added some frozen green beans, and the last of my homemade Chikn' Seitan. I added in tofu that I had cubed and tossed with the stir fry sauce, tahini, soy sauce, and hoisin then did a quick sear on it tossing in a handful of raw cashews at the end for some crunch (thank you Anna for reminding me to use cashews and Eden for the tahini).
Hope you all had a great Hump Day!

  1. I'm glad you're getting back to feeling like yourself, girl :-)

Sometimes you definitely just have to roll back over and keep sleeping!

  2. They only have to play the same music for the 2 weeks after the new release starts. Then they are free to mix it up. Not all instructors do though, which does get old. And sometimes I find spinning helps losen up tight leg muscles if I follow it with a really good stretch. :)

  3. Glad to hear you are starting to feel more like yourself. ;-)

  5. I'm glad you're feeling more self-like! I was sad to read about your "window-less" office mood! I can totally sympathize on that one! The six months I worked in a window-less office I got to leave everyday and drive 40 minutes home in sleet and snow (it was during the dead of winter). Ew. Stay positive and get some sunlight and Vitamin D, chica! :)

I love how you "whip up" something using ingredients you have on hand! You have such creativity! Your recipe page is also amazing! It must have taken awhile to create! Thank you for posting it.

    Have a fantastic Thursday, girlie!

  6. Always good to shake off the bad mojo! I'm sure the cooler weather helps!

  7. Its funny, I get the same way with rest days, they really happen spontaneously, never when I plan them. Thanks for mentioning me! my heart flutters a little when I see my name on another blog! I think I'm slowly picking up the mojo too. I think I've been lacking on good carbs lately so I made sure I overdid them today, that helped! What time do you get to bed? 5:00 am seems so painful, but then again I'm up around 6:45 so its not that far off.....Glad the stir fry worked out!

  8. cashews and tahini are great..but i am not a huge tahini fan...some is ok but it tends to overpower things to me. but i also hate garlic and onions so am not your "avg" bear :)

cooler weather is just what you need and sleep trumps workouts sometimes. roll with it girl!

  9. glad you made it to spin. I know, for us morning workout goers, sometimes its hard to get in that "late."
Oh tahini, I am a huge fan. Sorry averie. hehe.

  10. Hey, I'm a fan of the semi-homemade route! You know that "homemade" pizza I enjoyed with the wine last night? Yeah, whole wheat pizza dough from Trader Joe's. BUT I cut the mushrooms and assembled it, so semi-homemade it was! :)

  11. Nothing wrong with semi homemade! Sometimes that is just what you need. Life, workouts and food don't always have to be a process or hard. Sometimes we need a little simplicity! Your dinner looks delicious! I am really glad you did something new for your workout. I wish I lived closer to you...I would love to try a spin class, but I (get this) have never been to a gym or a workout class. Thank goodness the weather is getting cooler, right?! It has been miserable. Have a great day Heather and definitely keep that chin up!

  12. I used to go to Group Ride at my previous gym all the time and I really liked it! There are pro's and con's of course...the pro's of the same music week after week is that you know what to expect. The con's? It's the same music week after week and you know what to expect! ;-)

  13. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg Amen on the rolling over and going back to sleep!

Tina @ Faith Fitness and Fun Oh that's good to know. I heard some people already complaining about the music being redundant and it sounded like they hadn't change in a while.

Alicia @ Vegan Epicurean Thanks so much sweetie - me too!

Julie @ Julie GoLean I wish they offered the class in the morning at our gym. Hope you get to sleep in.

Laura @ B Foxy Fitness Thanks so much - still working on the recipe page. It'll take me a while I think. I am looking forward to lunchtime runs again with the hubs. That always helped me mood!

Madeline @ Greens and Jeans Yes finally below 90 degrees and below 70 at night!

Eden's Eats Glad to hear that you're starting to get back to normal too! I typically go to bed between 9 and 9:30 so pretty early!

Averie @ Loves Veggies and Yoga I feel the same about tahini. I only used a smidge. A little goes a long way for me.

Lindsay @ Cotter Crunch It can be hard to switch between different workout times. You sort of get used to a routine. I think it can be good to switch though...or that's what I tell myself.

Courtney @ Ice Cream & Wine There has to be something said for semi-homemade right?!

Sarena @ The Non-Dairy Queen Oh you are absolutely right - everything should be so hard. Sometimes I think I forget that. I do wish we lived closer to each other! It would be so fun to have a reliable gym partner or just a good friend who loved good (healthy) food even ;-)

Joanna Sutter @ Fitness & Spice LOL - I was thinking the same thing about the pros/cons thing. I think I am going to try to go at least once a week for something different.

  14. Isn't spin fun! It's one of those classes where you can make it harder if you want, I hate the people that just pedal - work it!

Please send me cool weather, thank you:)

  15. I'm seriously drooling over that stir fry!

I could never get into Spin, but maybe I'll give it another chance one day. I know people who love it!

  16. Yummy! :)

We got some rain, which brought a little cool front! We're out of the 100s, w00t!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Nichole @ Live for the Run LOL - that's what the girl next to me was doing - just pedaling. There is no way she should have been keeping up that speed after 5 freaking turns!

Kara @ My Wellnest I'll taking drooling as a compliment ;-) You might give spin another try. Instructors can make or break a class so try a different one out.

Tiffany @ Spartanette Training It feels downright cold after 100+ temps!

  18. i HATE late dinners. when I come home from work im HUNGRY dammit.

while I worked out last night, I DID get up and run for 35mins today! yay me! (nothing like a little self-proclaimed success).

  19. Stir fry such a great speedy dinner! I still have yet to try spin...I need to!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Why is it that your food always makes me want to lick the screen? lol and I'm glad you liked the spin class - I've never heard of group spin? How is it different?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Kenzie @ A Healthy Purpose Good for you for getting it done! Sometimes you just have to declare it so and do it period.

Kate @ What Kate Ate Oh you should give it a shot. Try it at least twice.

Alycia @ Fit n Fresh It's part of a program from Body Training Systems . It's like a pre-set workout with a set music track. My previous spin classes were just whatever each individual instructor did and weren't always like riding a bike - with pushups and sit and stands crazy things like that. And you wanting to lick the screen is a compliment!

  22. So glad you tried Ride!! LOVE BTS programs and totally have a new respect for them after trying that bad spin class we took in NJ! I may be a wee bit biased though ;)

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
