Taking Workout Back to the Gym

Back to the Gym
It was another frigid morning here. The crazy thing is that it started off as 32 then warmed up to 62. And of course that made me itch to run. But I behaved myself and hit the gym after work instead. Today I decided to do a 10 minute warm up on the elliptical then work my back (get the title now: back to the gym...).

The workout comes from STS Meso 2, Disc 15. And yes, I even brought my own resistance band along with me ;-) Oh, and for the chinups/pullups, I do have to do assisted exercises. I suppose if I take my back workouts to the gym more often, then maybe one day I'll be able to do them unassisted.

Lat pulldowns with band -12
T-Pull with band - 12
Y's with band - 12
Pull Ups Overhand - 12 or 30 seconds
Chinups Medium Grip - 12 or 30 seconds
Chinups - 12 or 30 seconds
One Arm Row - 12, 10, 8, TF
Barbell Rows - 12, 10, 8, TF

Note: There were supposed to be deadlifts with this workout as well, but I opted out of them today. Overall, it was a pretty good weight workout. I almost wish I had added in pullovers, but I was trying to follow the STS set up.

After the weights, I took myself back over to the elliptical for another 25 minutes of cardio before heading home so I could ice my knee and massage out the muscle. Not sure if that is even necessary, but I'm trying to be as cautious as possible.

Question Time
For any of you who have experienced IT band problems, how long did you hold off from running? How did you ease back into it might be a better question. As much as I want to get out and run, I am worried about a big fat failed attempt and major disappointment - not about losing any sort of endurance or any of that, but about the pain not going away, ever.

Tofu Thursday
This morning I managed to get some tofu pressing, and at lunch, Jason threw together a marinade and began marinating the tofu. This meant we could have a semi-easy meal (stir-fry) for dinner tonight. Of course, it did end up taking a bit longer than I had hoped because I still wanted to bake the tofu for extra firmness. I just can't stand mushy tofu no matter how good it might be.
I think the only thing missing was some crunch from cashews or peanuts. I always forget to add nuts to stir fry.

Workout Wednesday - Body Blaster Tabata

Happy Hump Day! I wanted to thank everyone for their comments on yesterday's post: Be Kinder to Your Body. Calories are Not the Enemy . It sounds like it resonated with many of you. Today I wanted to share a new workout with you. I've been working on interval workouts for some of my clients. I try to give them the most bang for their buck (time). I know that in an ideal world, we would all have time to do longer workouts. There would never be scheduling conflicts, sick husbands or kids, or sick us. In reality, workouts need to be effective and efficient. And they don't have to be lengthy to be effective and efficient either. There's no need to spend hours in a gym to get in a good workout. Interval workouts like HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) or tabata, or even interval running are great ways to get in a fantastic workout in a short amount of time and have many benefits. You can read more about Tabata workouts  here . Piriformis Update & Grilled Veggie Salad

New Piriformis Exercises Today wasn't too terrible for a Monday. Of course, I did leave a little early. That always helps huh ;-) I had another round of physical therapy today. My PT has been really researching piriformis syndrome and found an interesting article that discusses the use of McKenzie Exercises - typically used for back pain. I have started adding in low back extensions (one of the exercises) but now have a whole new list of exercises to add into my workout rotations. But, if it helps, I'll do it. I also asked her about dry needling (thanks Sarena ), which is sort of similar to acupuncture, but is more about trigger point and intramuscular stimulation. And I'm glad I asked because the timing is uncanny. One of the doctor's in the clinic happens to be going to get certified this weekend. They both believe that I am a prime candidate for the procedure. So we'll see how that goes. Kind of scared because I hate hate hate needles. Have any of you tr
