Warm Winter Day

Thank You
I really wanted to thank everyone for your kind words from yesterday's post. I know that most of my replies were simply "thank you" but your words and support really do mean a lot. I've had 14 years to reflect on what happened to my friend. I've written about it (would love to publish one day), I even sat through most of the trial.

So while I think about what has happened, I am now able to talk about it more freely. Sometimes I wonder if that might startle people a bit...in terms of how to react. I know it's also hard to know what to say to someone when talking about something so tragic, so sad, and so serious. So thank you all.

Cardio Only Day
This morning I wide awake shortly after 5 am. I thought about trying to stay in bed for another hour, but knew I wouldn't really fall back asleep. So I did myself a favor and got up to get my cardio done. I was not planning on step aerobics at all today. But weights are just not in the cards for me that early, and I did boxing yesterday.

So, I went with a fun, tried and true step workout - Step Blast. I did one of the premixes for a fun, sweaty 35-minute workout. This is the first time I've done step in well over a month. I've been worried it wouldn't bode well for my IT band. But I went with it, and it didn't seem to bother it.

I had planned on doing shoulders and triceps today after work. However, the weather was just too perfect to pass up a run - albeit a short one. We hit 73 degrees today! Seriously? This is nuts even for us. There was a nice, cooler breeze though so that kept me at a pretty comfortable temperature. Of course, I only did 2 miles, much more and I would have been pretty warm.

So with shorts and a short sports bra on, I hit the pavement for a short, quick run. I only allowed myself 2 miles tops. Absolutely no more. So that's exactly what I did. I did the 2 in just under 16 minutes, so it was a pretty decent pace. Apparently short, fast runs are my threshold right now. Anything over 3.5 miles and that's when my IT band seems to start to act up. I am starting to learn to accept 2 miles as a positive thing rather than a negative. 2-3 miles that are pain-free are a good sign.  Now to figure out how to successfully build back up the mileage.

As has become my normal routine, I rolled the crap out of my IT band post-run. I've even started rolling the left side just to be safe.

No Time for Messy Dinner
Dinner tonight ended up being Red Bean & Quinoa Burgers and sweet potato "fries." I really wasn't much in the mood for making a big mess in the kitchen as I'm trying my best to get the house clean and ready for a party we're having on Thursday for friends: Christmas Eve Eve Brunch. Also, I had to brave horrid traffic trying to get one last gift. After battling traffic, they didn't even have what i had gone for. What is it about this time of year and people forgetting how to drive and what traffic laws are? Just curious because all common sense and courtesy seems gone.

Workout Wednesday - Body Blaster Tabata

Happy Hump Day! I wanted to thank everyone for their comments on yesterday's post: Be Kinder to Your Body. Calories are Not the Enemy . It sounds like it resonated with many of you. Today I wanted to share a new workout with you. I've been working on interval workouts for some of my clients. I try to give them the most bang for their buck (time). I know that in an ideal world, we would all have time to do longer workouts. There would never be scheduling conflicts, sick husbands or kids, or sick us. In reality, workouts need to be effective and efficient. And they don't have to be lengthy to be effective and efficient either. There's no need to spend hours in a gym to get in a good workout. Interval workouts like HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) or tabata, or even interval running are great ways to get in a fantastic workout in a short amount of time and have many benefits. You can read more about Tabata workouts  here . Piriformis Update & Grilled Veggie Salad

New Piriformis Exercises Today wasn't too terrible for a Monday. Of course, I did leave a little early. That always helps huh ;-) I had another round of physical therapy today. My PT has been really researching piriformis syndrome and found an interesting article that discusses the use of McKenzie Exercises - typically used for back pain. I have started adding in low back extensions (one of the exercises) but now have a whole new list of exercises to add into my workout rotations. But, if it helps, I'll do it. I also asked her about dry needling (thanks Sarena ), which is sort of similar to acupuncture, but is more about trigger point and intramuscular stimulation. And I'm glad I asked because the timing is uncanny. One of the doctor's in the clinic happens to be going to get certified this weekend. They both believe that I am a prime candidate for the procedure. So we'll see how that goes. Kind of scared because I hate hate hate needles. Have any of you tr
