Weights & Simple Dinner

Weight Day
Apparently we skipped fall and jumped straight into winter, well, for a day or so anyway. Today was low 30's and gusting winds walking into the office. You can bet I pulled out my warm scarf and gloves for the trek in.

The highs were barely 40 degrees, maybe not even 40 thanks to the fun wind chill. This meant no desire to run today. I would have hit spin, but I had a webinar from 12:30-2. I decided to hit the gym early and get in the weights I had intended on doing yesterday.

I got there at 10 and it was lovely...in other words, I had the weights all to myself. Near the end of my workout one other man showed up then two girls. But as is typical, the females headed directly to the cardio equipment. I find it kind of sad to pretty much always be the only female in the weights area. Is this typical at your gym as well? Just curious.

Anyway, I started with 15 minutes on the elliptical as a warm up. Then I went with back, chest (done as supersets of 3x8), and some abs at the end.

SS#1
Underhand barbell rows
Hammer curls

SS#2
Pullovers
EZ bar barbell curls*

SS#3
Double-arm rows
Incline curls

*I have really been needing to branch out and use a barbell for curls. I always go with dumbbells, but am at a stand still with increasing weights. This was my first time using the EZ bar as we don't have a shorter barbell, just Olympic size.

Overall, it was a pretty good workout. I did have to go lighter than expected with the BB curls though. So, using the bar will be a good change up for me. I have a feeling that I am using more momentum than I think using the dumbbells. I couldn't do that with the bar.

Simple Dinner
We didn't make it to the grocery store this weekend, so the veggie selection is getting low. I did have some kale that was wilting away and some butternut squash that's really been screaming to be used (I swear it has).

So, shocker, we had kale and butternut squash tonight. There were several options I could have gone with of course. But I took the easier route and simply cubed and roasted the squash. I sauteed the kale with some onions, vegetable broth, and splash of orange juice, salt, pepper. I had two Gardein Chick'n Scallopini left in the freezer and some leftover vegan gravy.

So dinner ended up being both tasty and easy to assemble. I've been craving kale the past few days, so this definitely hit the spot. And even better? I have some squash leftover to use in a chili this week.

Daily To-Enjoy List:

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
