I'm a Fuddy Dud but I Went to a Burger Joint - Big Orange Review

Holiday Party Recap
Last night we went to a party with some friends. It was a law firm party at a nice hotel downtown. It seemed a little awkward to me, but our friends assured us we were more than welcome to join the party, that not everyone was going to be a lawyers.

We only knew a few other people through our friends. And I am still certain we were the only non-law related people there. It was fun getting dressed up and getting out of the house. We don't often go to fancy parties. But, I am not a very out-going person. Since I didn't really know anyone, the music wasn't exactly inspiring me to dance, and the free drinks weren't anything I cared for (the wine was horrid and they ran out of champagne right away)...I was ready to call it a night by 9pm.

I will admit that I felt really kind of bad about wanting to leave so quickly. I feel like I'm always the party pooper in the bunch. It's not that I don't want to have fun or know how to have fun, but I am really shy and reserved unless I'm in the right situation. So I feel out of place and self-conscious. I don't know how to overcome these feelings. And then of course I start feeling bad that I'm not being great company. So it becomes a bit of a downward spiral for me.

I know I could have just written about how much fun we had and posted pictures of me smiling, but I'm honest and I wanted to get it off my chest I suppose. Maybe I'm hoping someone else can relate to these feelings. It can really make you feel like a loner, like a failure to an extent even.

Weight Day
This morning I got up and managed to get my Christmas cards done before leaving for the gym. It was my goal for the morning. I already had my list with addresses and such, so it was really about just sitting down and getting them addressed.

At the gym, I went with trisets of 3x8 for shoulders, biceps and hamstrings after a 15-minute warmup session on the elliptical.

TS#1
Arnold press
Barbell curls (using EZ Bar)
Bulgarian deadlifts

TS#2
Upright rows
Hammer curls
Step ups

TS#3
Lateral raise
Incline curls
Hamstring roll-ins on ball - 10 reps

I followed up with some ab work.

Heather Goes to Burger Joint
After the gym, we headed to the grocery store before going back home. I got cleaned up and put on my yoga pants and comfy (ugly) sweatshirt. Originally, we were supposed to have lunch with our friends that we went to the party with last night. They weren't quite up for it (see, another reason to be an old fuddy dud), so I assumed we were done and in for the day.

Jason, however, had his heart set on going out to a place called Big Orange for lunch. It's a fairly new burger joint that happens to be nowhere near out house. They do have homemade black bean patties and a lentil falafel patty along with a variety of salads though. So that's why Jason has been trying to get me to agree to go.

By the time we got there, I was getting extremely cranky. A hungry Heather is an ugly Heather to be around. They said there was a 15 minute wait. I really thought I was going to crack at that point. Luckily, we don't mind sitting in a bar height table, or in the bar I should say, so we didn't have to wait as long.

Since we were both so hungry, we started with their Hummus and Tzatziki plate. (I was too hungry to think about pictures at this point.) The hummus was pretty good. I was hungry though and thought the carrots were the best I'd ever had...ever. So I might have said cardboard tasted awesome ;-)

I ended up going for the Atom Bomb Burger subbing the hamburger for their vegetarian black bean patty. The sandwich was supposed to come with: Jack Cheese, Pickled Jalapeño, Butter Leaf Lettuce, Sriracha, and Chipotle-Red Pepper Mayo. I had them hold the mayo.
Jason ordered the Curried Falafel and Lentil Burger described as: House-Made Falafel and Curried Lentil Patty with Cucumber, Avocado, Tomato, Cilantro, Tzatziki, and Sriracha.

Clearly we both love Sriracha. Mine was definitely spicy, just as described. But it wasn't so hot that you missed out on the flavors of the patty. In fact, the veggie burger was really quite good. It's always nice when you can see the bits of veggies mixed in. The Falafel and Lentil burger was amazing as well. Such great flavors. I was really happy with the vegetarian options. It's rare to find a place around here that offers homemade veggie burgers. Usually it's just a frozen patty thawed out.

It's nice to go somewhere and be pleasantly surprised. Now, the service was a bit slow and strange, but overall, I'd recommend the place to friends. I imagine we'll be back ourselves.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
