Celebration Recap & HIIT Workout

Celebration Recap
As I mentioned yesterday, my sister came up to stay with me to celebrate her birthday. We started of the afternoon with a late lunch at Canon Grill. We were supposed to meet friends at a wine bar about a block away at 5. Funny, our friends walked into the restaurant while we were finishing our meal.

They had wanted to grab a snack and watch a game on the tv there and then just meet us at the wine bar - Diversion. I missed the text so had no idea they were going to Canon Grill and they had no idea we were there. But, it worked out nicely.

The girls went to the wine bar at 5, and the boys went to another bar with tvs to finish the game (not a clue what game to be honest). The vibe was really laid back, hip. But it was almost a bit too dark. I mean, I would like to read the menu list ;-) I tried to not be too shocked at the prices....but wow. Proud of the wine. But we were there to celebrate and have fun, so I just went with it.

We all ended up getting the same wine - Kris, Pinot Grigio. They didn't have a pinot noir by the glass, or one I was willing to pay a buttload for. Yep, high class, that's me. Kris Wine is an Italian wine. I tend favor Italian wines and this one did not disappoint.

After one glass, we headed back to the house to just relax, chat, and chat some more. I pulled out the pizza doughs and got started on our dinner. It was so fun to make the pizzas and visit with my besties. The boys made it home around 7:30 or so. They played pool until dinner was ready then we all dug in.
To top off dinner, we all shared the cupcakes I had bought for Sarah. I didn't try the chocolate cupcake with chocolate icing (because I don't care for chocolate), but apparently I should have bought more of that flavor as it was the hands down winner.
I'll admit to some more wine drinking and even some dancing. Basically, we had an absolute blast. It might not have been some big birthday bash, but I think my sister appreciated the intimacy of celebrating with close friends so much more.

No Long Run
Today I got up ready to go for the long run. Well, I was mentally ready, my foot, however, not so much. I think it's plantar fasciitis, but it feels a little different than when I had that problem previously in my left foot. This is more near the heel and not the arch. I've been trying to ice, massage, and stretch my whole foot and calf all week. Sometimes it feels better than others, but when it hurts....it really really hurts.

I was really torn on the run. I was so set on that being the plan. But I had to be honest with myself, a run was not going to be good for me. All the run would truly accomplish was more pain. So, I ended up going to the gym. I know it was the right choice rationally, but I had so hoped to get outside and run today - it was a pretty day darn it.

I did 15 minutes on the elliptical then went into the cardio room and set up the laptop. I had brought along Cathe's HIIT DVD to do. I haven't done HIIT workouts in quite possibly a year. I used to love HIIT workouts, and did them often. Um, apparently you can get out of shape for HIIT workouts if you don't do them....trust me on this one.

The HIIT DVD has 3 different workouts to choose from. I went with the Double Wave Pyramid workout. Holy Freaking HIIT. My legs were seriously shaking by the time I was done. I used to be able to do that workout without a problem. I swear, running 12 miles today would have been easier!

So, maybe a new goal is to add in more HIIT workouts for endurance and for the explosive muscles. Because I seriously felt so out of shape doing this workout today. Luckily, it didn't bother my foot too much. I mean, it wasn't pain-free I'll admit, but better than running.

After the workout, it was back into PJs and some major relaxing. I did get laundry washed, but we pretty much just relaxed the majority of the day. I do feel just a tad guilty because I should have gone to the grocery store, and it was a gorgeous day out, but sometimes lazy is what you need right?

Daily To-Enjoy List:
  • Sunshine
  • Hard workout
  • Serious relaxing

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
