A Day in Pictures - Mount Nebo

Well, yesterday didn't go quite as planned. This poor baby didn't get his surgery after all.
We spent an hour talking with the vet about everything, the surgery, complications, etc. before leaving him in their care. They had to do a few other tests just before surgery to check his retinas and other areas of the eye. But that needed to be done when he was under anesthesia.

In the end, he was diagnosed with progressive retinal atrophy. He's going blind, and there is nothing that can be done. The cataract surgery would have simply been a waste of money, as it (at best) would have given him his sight from about 6 months ago and it wouldn't have lasted but maybe 6 months at the most.

We found this out after our hiking and picnic, so we did at least have a good time doing that. Jason and I are both terribly sad about the whole thing. I know that he's healthy and happy otherwise and must remember that this isn't a death sentence by any means. I just wanted my furman to be able to see so he could run, play, hike with us.

While we were waiting on Heath, we took Maddie for a hike. We found a moderate intensity trail that was 3.5 miles around the rim of Mount Nebo. So here's our day in pictures

I haven't been posting on Saturdays, but I did want to share about Heath. I also wanted to thank everyone for their kind words on Friday's post. I loved reading everyone's pet stories and appreciate the well wishes for Heath's surgery.

  1. Oh no! Poor baby. My chocolate lab Madison is getting so old. She has laryngeal paralysis so she breathes heavy all the time and her back legs aren't working the best but the vet doesn't want to put her under to operate. We just try to keep her as comfortable as possible and let her rest a lot.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th...

Let's Have Coffee

If you're a regular blog reader, I'm sure you've seen similar posts, scenarios if you will, about what we might chat about or what I might say if we sat down and had coffee together. I think these can be fun. Maybe fun isn't the right word choice exactly. But maybe it is? They're transparent, showing who the blogger really is ... if they're being honest of course. It's not often you truly get to sit down with the person behind the blog. Banana Nut Biscotti with Banana Glaze If we were to have coffee together ... I would first let you know that I'm not a super fan of coffee. I drink mine with hot cocoa and it's mostly out of habit rather than the need for caffeine. I could forgo it on the weekends entirely. Since we're talking coffee, I would also let you know that I've never ordered coffee from Starbucks and only once from a true coffee shop. I've only been into 2 Starbucks shops - the original in Seattle and one in town wher...
