New Running Gear & Non-Steak Salad

New Running Gear
Today I had extra incentive to get out and run - new running gear! I ordered a couple of things for myself and Jason from Brooks Running on Friday and it already arrived today. Love fast shipping like that! Needless to say, I "had" to take my new hat and shirt for a test run.

I loved the hat. It is super light and kept the sweat out of my face - huge plus for me. It was a little big so I kind of had to rig it a little, but I have to do that with almost every hat I buy.

The shirt is the ideal shirt for warm-weather running. Normally I just wear a sports bra when it gets hot. But I have wanted to try singlets but never found any that didn't stick to me, make me feel claustrophobic. They all seem to make me even hotter, the last thing I need when it's it's 80+ degrees out.

It was about 73, so not terribly hot mind you, but definitely sweat-inducing after you got moving. And this shirt? I wish I would have ordered several of them. It is super light, airy, and definitely moisture-wicking. I would highly recommend to anyone who runs in the heat but doesn't want to just run in a sports bra.

We got in a nice 3.6 mile run today. Tried to keep the speed in check. We've kind of gotten into a habit of going fast for any shorter runs, and this isn't the best habit for me right now trying to fully recover. I'm afraid I've been pushing too hard to be honest.

And this is where having a Garmin truly comes in handy - I could monitor my speed and keep myself in check. It also helped me stop myself at the distance we had set out for rather than just pushing on and going longer (which I really wanted to do).

Overall, I thought it was a really good run. Jason probably started to get a bit annoyed with me as I was chatting quite a bit. I think that's why sometimes he goes faster...to shut me up ;-)

Not-Steak Salad
When I got home from work, I did my new low-back exercises, stretched, and rolled for about 30 minutes. I wish I got paid for all that! I have a feeling my back is going to be sore tomorrow.

Dinner tonight ended up being a take on something we used to make ages and ages ago. I had found a steak salad wrap recipe from some magazine or other many years ago. I used a product I can no longer find to sub as the steak in the salad.

Lucky for me, Gardein has started making a product that I thought would sub nicely for this salad - BBQ Skewers. Since I no longer have the recipe, I sort of just winged the whole thing. It's what I do best really.

I sauteed red onion, green and red bell peppers, jalapenos, and fresh garlic until the onions began to soften. I added in the skewers, black beans, and frozen corn and cooked until the corn was thawed. I seasoned with cumin, cilantro, salt, pepper, chili powder, and lime zest. At the very end, I tossed in green onions and diced tomatoes.

I made up a dressing using fresh lime juice, lime zest, pineapple, green chile peppers with some red wine vinegar, cilantro, and salt.

I topped with some Daiya Vegan Cheese and did add some more jalapenos to mine. While this was nothing like the original recipe, it was pretty darn good in my book.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
