Sick not "Sick" Weekend

Well, I must say this weekend was so not as planned. I mentioned last week that I was feeling kind of cruddy. And it never went away.

Friday I was off work. My plan was to go ahead and get in my 10-mile run then get my hair cut then spend the rest of the day with my sister. I woke up still really stuffy, sore throat, sinus headache. But I went ahead and headed out for my run.

I got in 5.4 miles before stopping by the house to meet up with Jason and to change from short-sleeved shirt to tank. It was already in the mid-60's and humid. The run wasn't easy. It was tough and tougher because I kept going faster than necessary. I don't know if it was just a "let's just get this shit over with" thing or what, but I was going way too fast. I was way too sick. And it was way too warm.

Jason did 3.6 miles with me and I called it done with all caps at 9 miles. I rushed to get cleaned up and to my hair appointment, then met my sister at Target. I had regular shopping to do and she wanted to do some Christmas shopping. Then we headed over to the mall for a bit.

The crazy thing was that she sounded just like me except her crud has hit her chest and I've managed to keep mine out of my chest. So I feel like I'm winning even though I'm loosing.

We did go out and meet up with friends for a very very brief happy hour before going home and putting on PJs and just visiting the rest of the evening. I will say that even though both of us were cruddy, we did have a great time. I always love her company.

Saturday I realized that I was done. There would be no running, no workouts of any shape or form. And that pretty much was the rest of the weekend - me on the couch in PJs going through a box of tissues.

Though, I did manage to wash some laundry, make ciabatta bread and an amazing caramelized onion and Japanese eggplant concoction that we enjoyed Sunday for lunch. But other than that, PJs and booty on the couch.

I kind of had it in my head that if I did nothing Saturday, I'd miraculously be better on Sunday. I could make up for the day of nothing by getting in a run, putting up my Christmas decorations. Yep, that's what I thought.

That's not what happened. Sunday I woke up with a crazy swollen lymph node near my clavicle. At least my throat wasn't as sore...

I won't lie, I felt like a slug just sitting, dozing, sitting, blowing my nose. I don't sit still very well, but I had no choice this time. So 3 rest days for the week and maybe a few more...Going to try to get to the doctor today.

How do you do with just sitting when you're sick? Do you take that chance to rest up with no guilt or do you find yourself feeling guilty for not being able to do anything?

  1. I embrace the sickness rest. If I try too much too soon I get frustrated and pissed. I know now that it's temporary and if I rest I can get back to the intensity that I want and feel good. Take it easy for a bit longer. Hope you feel better soon!

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th...

Weights, Wraps, and Words

Weight Day Wednesday This morning I had the alarm set for 5:26 am as Jason had agreed to another morning run. However, when the alarm went off, Jason pretty much said, "NO." I am not one to fall back asleep easily, so I went ahead and got up and opted for a fun step workout. I chose one of the shorter premixes from Cathe's Step Blast. While I hadn't really wanted to do a step workout (had my mind set on a run), it was a fun, sweaty workout in the end. During lunch I went home to do weights. I almost put it off. I was feeling totally unenthusiastic. I was pretty certain, however, that if I just got off my lazy butt and got the workout started, I'd be very happy that I did. And I was. The set up was 2 sets of 15 reps supersetting the exercises and increasing the weights: Triceps - Weighted triceps dips Biceps - Dumbbell curls Legs - Rear leg elevated lunges Shoulders - Lateral raises Chest - Flat bench dumbbell press Back - Underhand rows Legs - Squats Inner Th...
