Sick Furbaby & Way to Go Wednesday

Heath Update
Just a quick thank you to everyone who's sent happy thoughts, vibes and love for my Heath Man.

We had hoped he would be home last night, but the vet decided to keep him overnight. This always makes me crazy worried of course. We found out that he has Gallbladder Mucocele.

While I tried to stay away from the internet and searching about gallbladder issues for dogs, I ended up breaking down and searching after we got the diagnoses. I really want to know as much as I can. To know what to expect, possible treatment options, etc.

Our vet wants to go with the options recommended in the article I linked to above. Mostly medication, a change in his food to include more liver boosting nutrients. But I've read other articles that suggested surgery was a better option. But then I read others that suggested an even higher mortality rate post-surgery.

Any vets out there who want to weigh in? Apparently when Heath had health issues last July and they thought he had possibly gotten into poison because of the test results that revolved around liver function, it was really this gallbladder disease. But because his body isn't processing bile, it can show up as problems with liver function as well.

When he started getting sick Monday, we were panicked thinking he had gotten into poison or something somehow. Kind of like we had assumed previously. We hadn't put out any poison, but you just never know what a dog can manage to find.

At least we know the cause. But now onto a solution. And that's the scary part of course. And what's even worse is that he's not responding well to the meds and IV yet. He's not eating. And he's not coming home tonight and maybe not for a few days. It's just breaking my heart.

Way to Go Wednesday
It's that time of the week again! More running PRs, PDRs, and just flat out sticking with it (life, running, whatever).

Kalli at Fit and Forty Something for her first full marathon - the LA Marathon.

Kristin at Stufmama does it again with another new PR at the LA Marathon.

Angela at Happy Fit Mama for hitting a new PDR of 20 miles!

Amanda aka Miss Zippy for another full marathon completed, and though not the race she'd hoped for, she did it and is finding positive perspective.

Kristina (SpaBettie) and her dad. If you know Kristina, then you understand this important shout out.

Who would you like to give a shout out to?

  1. So sorry about your dog! I don't know what I'll do if my Sallie-girl ever gets sick.

    Can I give a shout-out to myself for PR-ing in a virtual 10k? It's my most hated distance. :-) http://www.enjoyingthecourse.com/2013/03/running-and-biking-and-baseball.html

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
