Being Realistic - No Morning Workout

No Morning Workout
Well, I didn't really think I'd be getting up early to workout this morning. I made a half-hearted attempt by setting my alarm for 5:05 am though. At 4:20 I changed the time to 6:15 instead. I had to be totally realistic with myself. It would not have been a good (or safe) workout. I needed the sleep much more than the trip and fall over the step.

I am really rather sore from my weights yesterday. Sort of surprised. Not sure if it was because I really did push myself or because I lifted while mostly asleep! Today was cardio only. I almost opted out entirely, but decided that I really would prefer Friday to be my rest day. I doubt I'll get up early (and don't want that pressure). My sister is coming up after work so I would have to get the workout done in the morning. So, today was Step Blast with abs from Step, Jump and Pump and then a stretch. Nothing over the top. Just a good, old fashioned step routine.

So do you think it's OK to push yourself into a workout when you're running on fumes? Is the brief energy boost worth it or do you think it does more harm than good? Maybe it's more about honestly listening to your own body (like I did this morning).

Another Easy Dinner
Dinner tonight was another go-to meal. No creative juices flowing and no desire for any major kitchen clean up. Something easy was the order of the evening. Tonight is just another example of when preparing food ahead of time is so worth it. I pulled out In a Jiffy Spelt Veggie Burgers from the freezer and baked sweet potato "fries" for the side. My stash of veggie burgers is dwindling, however. I will need to spend some time in the kitchen this weekend making more patties to restock the freezer.

What recipes do you pre-make and keep on hand?

  1. I think its intuitive - sort of like intuitive eating? Intuitive working out too - if you feel like you will do NO good by pushing yourself, don't bother. But - if you think you might actually be successful and useful during a workout while on fumes, go for it. Sounds like you made the right choice today!

  2. Jessica @ eatdrinkbreathesweat I think it's intuitive too, when we remember to listen! LOL. And I think you know what I'm talking ab out. I do know that tomorrow is a REST day. Hope you're feeling better.

  3. I have to agree that you need to listen to your body. If you feel too uncoordinated to get a good workout don't do it. You could hurt yourself. When I don't sleep well I normally opt for a late day work out when I am more awake. It seems to keep me from hurting myself as I can be clutzy first thing in the morning when running on fumes.

For quick dinners I keep seitan, veggie burgers, falafel and cooked beans in the freezer. I also make extra brown rice and freeze that too. With a rice and protein from the freezer I can have dinner ready in 10 minutes.

  5. Alicia @ Vegan Epicurean So glad you mentioned freezing the brown rice. Hubby likes it (I don't really) but it'd sure come in handy for a quick dinner! Wonder how well pearled barley freezes...

Kris | iheartwellness gotta love a good veggie burger!!!

  6. good for you listening to you body! so many people don't do this and thats when injuries occur or just moodiness if you over exert yourself!

I push myself if I am just being lazy and dont want to workout but I never push myself too hard if I am sore, or not feeling well (sick)

go to dinner? that would be veggie meatballs with tomatoe sauce veggie and a LC wedge!!

  7. Hi Naomi @ One Fit Foodie Do you have that veggie meatball recipe on your site by the way??? You are so right about injury OR moodiness. I often experience the irritability factor when I over-exert myself.

  8. Heather,

I haven't tried freezing cooked barley yet, but it should be fine since brown rice and wheat berries both work. If you try it please let us know how it reheats.

  10. Thanks for stopping by Averie @ LoveVegiesAndYoga ! You know, I love salads and eat them almost every day for lunch, but forget about them for dinner. Thanks for the reminder that they are good for dinner too!

Let's Have Coffee

If you're a regular blog reader, I'm sure you've seen similar posts, scenarios if you will, about what we might chat about or what I might say if we sat down and had coffee together. I think these can be fun. Maybe fun isn't the right word choice exactly. But maybe it is? They're transparent, showing who the blogger really is ... if they're being honest of course. It's not often you truly get to sit down with the person behind the blog. Banana Nut Biscotti with Banana Glaze If we were to have coffee together ... I would first let you know that I'm not a super fan of coffee. I drink mine with hot cocoa and it's mostly out of habit rather than the need for caffeine. I could forgo it on the weekends entirely. Since we're talking coffee, I would also let you know that I've never ordered coffee from Starbucks and only once from a true coffee shop. I've only been into 2 Starbucks shops - the original in Seattle and one in town wher...

KIND Bar Review + Apple Raisin Wheat Berry Salad

Weights & Step As much as I wanted to run today, I knew there was no getting up early enough to do so. Monday's are hard enough without getting up at 5 am to run. Yawn ... So, today I did my weights at lunch then cardio after work. Weights were pull muscles (biceps and back). I did 3 sets of 8 reps of the following: Biceps : Alternating curls Cross-body curls Zottoman curls Back: Single-arm horizontal row Underhand DB rows Double arm rows It was a pretty good workout. I felt pretty strong today for some reason. Love it when that happens. My legs were pretty sore from yesterday's workout, so I opted for a lower intensity cardio: Cathe's Low Impact Circuit - Cardio Only Premix plus abs. It was a great workout and helped to loosen up my legs. KIND Review I have been very remiss with my review of the KIND bars that I won from Jill @ My So Called Health LIfe . I won the Nut Delight. I don't know why, but I expected it to be a tad softer...
