Fun Facts Friday - Jobs

Friday Rest Day
Not only is today Friday, but it's my rest day. My biceps are still talking to me from Tuesday's workout. Not sure what that's all about. I don't ever remember my biceps being this sore, this long. I didn't think I even went all that heavy - maybe it was the slow rep count. Anyway, I do wish I had it in me to get my Saturday workout in today and Sunday's tomorrow. I really need Sunday off because we are supposed to help my dad and step-mother move, so that means I need to figure out when and how to squeeze in the workout (legs). I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Thank you for the cardio suggestions. I do enjoy running outside, and would prefer to do that, but the heat is just too much right now unless I can manage the run around 5:30 am (and remember, I am not a morning gal). I may have to just start making myself get up though for the summer months if I want to run.

Fun Facts Friday - Jobs

Since there was so much discussion this week on careers, I thought it might be fun to share some jobs we've all had over the years. By the way, I truly appreciate everyone's comments. I was very surprised that the topic would generate so much interest and love it!!

Before going to the fun facts, I did want to quote a terrific idea that Kris @ I Heart Wellness suggested. I thought this was fantastic:
"A good trick to find out your true passion is to walk into a book store and see what magazine section you naturally go to first? Fashion, Fitness, Food?? This will tell you where your true passions lie."
I go straight to fitness then home decor. Where do you go?

Fun Facts - Past Jobs

1. Worked at a souvenir shop called the Duck Port. The city I grew up in is famous for lakes, natural hot springs, and is a big tourist destination. A friend's father owned a souvenir shop on lake where the "duck" tours would stop. Can I just say tourists can be soooo mean.

2. Worked for Waldenbooks for 5 years to pay for school. I am a HUGE reader so this worked well, except for the random nasty customers.  Don't ever think that a cashier is just some high school kid someone who didn't make it through college. I worked with people with MAs, who spoke 5 languages, etc. I say that because sometimes customers would talk down to us as if we were beneath them. Sorry for that rant.

3. Waited tables at a "Hooters" wanna-be-bar in Auburn, AL. Yep, short shorts and all.

Your turn.

Comments

  1. I definitely go straight to health and nutrition, then food.

I don't have any fun past jobs. =( I worked in a health food store during college. During grad school I waited tables at Rusty Scupper. Next I worked in commerical banking and finally health care finance. Not so interesting. Sorry.

  3. I know what you mean about sore muscles...I did a different strength training two days ago and my thighs are on fire! I totally go to the food/health section first...ALWAYS.

I worked at a day care when I was in high school and the first part of college...from then on it was food then catering.

  4. Your sore muscles may be because you didn't work them much on vacation so now that you are back into your routine they just need to catch up to it!

My jobs: First job was at Ponderosa....they don't exist here anymore but I do know they are still in the USA. Then I worked for La Senza, its a lingerie store.....yes I had so many pretty bras....LOL Bras sort of stuck with me. I then worked for a department store head office in the buying office for.....guess.....yup BRAS. Then I went and worked as a Senior Analyst for a manufacturer.....guess what kind.........yup BRAS.....do you see a pattern. DH and my business now has nothing to do with bras....I have had enough of that ;)

My weirdest job was a one day thing where I dressed up like Uncle Sam (I'm Canadian!) and handed out Atkins-diet samples...ugh. I need more cardio ideas too! I think I am going to look at taking classes.

  8. I hate it when customers talk down to cashiers! I had to deal with that as a cashier at a grocery store in high school. There was one lady who would come in every week to buy special imported bottled water... for her CATS! And she was so rude to everyone.

  9. I used to be a regular extra on disney channel shows cause I'm short and small. I'd be on set at 6am! ugh not proud! I can't believe I'am a a chef and yoga instructor now!

  12. Alicia @ Vegan Epicurean The food magazines are my 3rd choice. The Rusty Scupper???

Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel #1 cashier! Awesome. The sports bar wasn't too bad. Loved the regulars.

Sarena @ The Non-Dairy Queen New workouts always kick booty don't they? That's why changing it up is so good. I think it could be fun to work in food and catering - stressful of course.

Bela @ It's Life, Max it Out Too funny on the bras!

Kalli @ Fit and Forty Something Skiing? Interesting. I used to want to sell real estate. I think it's b/c I always enjoy going to open houses!

Averie @ Loves Veggies and Yoga I figured out the arms - cross-body curls. I've never done them so I found new muscles!

Sarah @ Run Sarah Ok - now that job takes the cake ;-)

Chelsea @ The Healthy Munchkin I wish I had enough money to throw away on bottled water for my pets!

  14. I love Walden Books! Or any bookstore really. I used to work in a coffee shop which as I'm sure you can imagine was amazing :)

  15. Whew! I just looked at all the posts I needed to catch up on, and all the food you posted looks outstanding! I'm so impressed with your workouts. I joined the gym in December and really like the way my body has gained strength. Anyhow, I go straight towards the food sections in bookstores, whether it's magazines or books. My first job was a snack bar at a movie theatre. And, one of my most exciting jobs was an undercover sting agent for the Bureau of Automotive Resources in California. We'd pose as motorists who needed smog checks with cars that couldn't pass. If the station would pass us, they'd get ticketed or closed.

  16. Whoops, I meant Bureau of Automotive Repair, not Resources. Hee.

  17. Alicia @ Vegan Epicurean Never heard of it but the name is hysterical to me. Thanks for letting me know.

Megan @ The Oatmeal Diaries I'm definitely a bookstore junkie!

Blessed Mama Ok, so you totally take the cake on the jobs! How cool.

  18. Thanks, Heather. It was a blast, but I was always a little nervous.

  19. Is it Monday already?? I did ZERO blog reading this weekend and I'm catching up this morning, so please excuse my late response :) I love this topic and reading everyone's responses was so fun! How fun to have Hooters on your resume :) In high school and all through college when I was home on break I worked serving tables at Bob Evans (oh boy!). My college job was as a receptionist at a tattoo parlor. I worked the register and told people how to care for their new tattoos and piercings! My first job out of college was as a CSR at a digital book printer, a company that catered specifically to self-publishing individuals. I quickly learned that there are a lot of wackos out there that wrote their own books and since they can't find anyone to publish their book they decide to do it themselves. I kept several 'souvenirs' from that job, meaning I have an extremely interesting book case at home!! These souvenirs are much less permanent than the ones I got from my college job ;)

  20. You know, it's funny, a lot of people in my day to day life don't know about my ink (including my disapproving father). I hope there are no comment tracking devices out there to find this comment haha!! I have a big mural of sorts on my back, from my wasteline to my bra line and it wraps slightly onto my ribs on both sides. It's 2 giant panda bears, and other very Asian looking things including red and yellow sun rays in the background, swirling clouds, dragonflies, and flowers. Now you know my secret!! :)

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
