KIND Bar Review + Apple Raisin Wheat Berry Salad

Weights & Step
As much as I wanted to run today, I knew there was no getting up early enough to do so. Monday's are hard enough without getting up at 5 am to run. Yawn... So, today I did my weights at lunch then cardio after work. Weights were pull muscles (biceps and back). I did 3 sets of 8 reps of the following:

Biceps:
Alternating curls
Cross-body curls
Zottoman curls

Back:
Single-arm horizontal row
Underhand DB rows
Double arm rows

It was a pretty good workout. I felt pretty strong today for some reason. Love it when that happens. My legs were pretty sore from yesterday's workout, so I opted for a lower intensity cardio: Cathe's Low Impact Circuit - Cardio Only Premix plus abs. It was a great workout and helped to loosen up my legs.

KIND Review
I have been very remiss with my review of the KIND bars that I won from Jill @ My So Called Health LIfe. I won the Nut Delight. I don't know why, but I expected it to be a tad softer than it was. Yes, it's all nuts so of course it's going to be crunchy, but I mean the sweeter binding. Don't get me wrong, being a little crisper was not a bad thing at all. Oh, and if you love nuts, then you will LOVE this bar. It's packed with whole nuts, lots of them! Unlike many granola type bars, this one was not too sweet. It was just right in my opinion. I can't wait to try some with the fruit now.

Simple Supper
Jason requested my Apple Cranberry Wheat Berry Salad (recipe here). I started the wheat berries when I got home and let them cook while I was doing my cardio. When I got ready to mix everything together, I realized I was out of cranberries, but I did have raisins. So, the salad ended up being an Apple Raisin Wheat Berry Salad. We had that along with a green salad using lettuce and tomatoes from the garden with red, yellow, and orange bell peppers and a Quorn Cranberry & Goat Cheese Chik'n Cutlets.
I just love the textures and flavors that the wheat berry salad has. You get chewy, crunchy, sweet, and savory. What are your favorite flavor and/or texture combinations?

Krystina @ Organically Me Oh you must try wheat berries. They're so good - take a bit to cook, but worth it. I need to check out her recipe.

Sarena @ The Non-Dairy Queen Thanks girl - you're too sweet!!! Have a good one too.

Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel Free is always good isn't it ;-) I probably wouldn't have tried them otherwise. I look forward to trying out some of the others now at least.

  6. I had the same reaction to KIND bars-- I expected them to be much softer, for some reason! Once I got over the fact that they were crunchy, I liked them!

  7. I have never seen those Kind Bars. I see alot of peanuts in them though so I couldn't have them in the house unfortuantely!

We love wheat berry salads too. Yours looks great.

In my world 5am is too early to get up and do anything that isn't an emergency, like flee a burning house. But that is just me. ;-)

Oooo, I love when I feel strong after strength workouts! Best feeling ever. I have yet to try wheat berries but an apple-raisin version sounds really good! I love grains with some sweet elements so I'll have to try it!

  11. Sweet and sour is my favorite flavor combination!

I've never cooked with wheat berries. In fact, I'm not entirely sure I've ever heard of them! Time to do some research. :)

Your dinner looks delicious! I am anxious to make a wheatberry salad, I just need to remember to pre-soak them overnight. I love sweet and savoury together!

  14. Aaahhh I just love that dinner- simple but sooo satisfying. I'm a big lover of sweet and savory mixes. And I just adore lots of texture. Chewy and crunchy are my favorites!

  15. KIND bars are soo good, and the fruit ones are even better! Cranberry and almond is my favorite I think. Also I am officially writing "wheatberries" on my grocery list!

  16. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg Funny you thought they'd be softer too. Wonder why??? LOL

Bela @ It's Life, Max it Out I can't remember if there were peanuts (most likely) I just remember big hunks of almonds LOL. Oh you must try wheat berries if you have not tried them yet. So good.

Tricia @ Endurance Isn't Only Physical yum was what Jason and I both thought too! ;-)

Alicia @ Vegan Epicurean The stats weren't bad. A little higher in cals but that's b/c of the nuts. LOL on the fleeing house! That's honestly how I feel too.

Caronae @ Run Write Therapy Life Let me know if you try either of the versions out. They are both quite good (if I must brag).

Eunice @ Food 4 Fitness Have you had barley? They are sort of similar, but have more texture, more bite. That's what I love about them.

Madeline@ Greens and Jeans Oh salty/sweet is a hard one to beat - white chocolate covered prattles anyone????

Sarah @ Run Sarah I actually stopped soaking them. It really didn't seem to make any difference in cooking time to be honest.

Andrea @ Can You Stay for Dinner I am super texture oriented so I love the combination of a variety of textures too. Makes your feel like you're really eating! LOL

  17. I was surprised of the texture of the Kind bars too! They're kind of sticky, but very tasty!

  18. I love all nuts, I don't discriminate. Need to try out those bars though.

  21. You should try sprouting your wheatberries. It's really easy, you get tonnes of nutrients, and it's raw!

  22. I LOVE those days when I feel strong- especially after a great workout. My favorite strong feeling is in my arms- I think that is the best :)
I have never seen any KIND bars near me- but maybe I'm not looking hard enough. I agree with you about the 'not too sweet' factor- I hate when they taste like pure sugar.
Thanks for being so awesome Heather & for all of your sweet words.

  23. I love sweet and savory AND hot/cold. I love hot stuff on cold, crunchy veggies! like a warm quinoa salad on a bed of cold butter lettuce!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lindsay @ Pancakes N Pajamas Yes - sticky too. But not necessarily in a bad way.

Nichole @ Live for the Run I'm with you on nuts! Almonds would be heavenly with the wheat berries. I added walnuts b/c walnuts seem to go with apples in my crazy mind.

Dawn @ Florida Coastal Cooking So glad you stopped by. I've been enjoying reading through your blog now!!

Jessica @ EatDrinkBreatheSweat They sure beat those days when you feel like 8lb is too heavy LOL!!! ;-)

Kelly @ Healthy Living with Kelly I'm excited about them and kind of kicking myself for not having tried them sooner.

Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday Thanks for sharing the link - I'll check it out!

Holly @ Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices Oh strong arm days are the best aren't they! And you're very welcome girl - feel free to email me if you ever need to!

  27. Mmmm I do love the kind bars, but sometimes find them a tad too sweet. I usually take them to the movies with me as a nice treat! (I did not mean for that to rhyme,....it just happened that way ;) )

    Your dinners are always fab!

    xxoo

    I have tons of combos I like, but I'd say salty+sweet, and crunchy+creamy are 2 faves :)

I love salads that are loaded with all kinds of textures and tastes, including a grain, dried fruit, nuts, cheese or eggs, and all kinds of veggies. The dried fruit meets my sweet tooth's needs.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life Creamy and crunchy is always good. Best of both worlds!

Lisa @ Lisa's Foods on the Move I rarely think to add dried fruit - good call. Sweet and chewy too.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
