Run + Weights = Another Lazy Saturday

Friday & Baseball Recap
I loved hearing all of your comments and thoughts about blogger food trends!! It's so fun to hear what you guys really think. I don't feel so alone now LOL.

We had a great time at the game last night. One of the couples ended up having to cancel last minute, but our friend Gwynne still joined us. It started off HOT - 96 with 102 heat index. However, as the sun went down, the humidity seemed to drop and we had an awesome cross breeze. It turned out to be a very pleasant evening, perfect for a baseball game. The game was a bit slow, but the conversation and company was the best.

Cardio Before Weights = Bad
This morning I got up and had my typical Saturday PB&J&B Oatmeal. I was wanting to run really badly, but I was also planning on weights. I really don't like to do cardio before weights because I feel like I then have less energy to focus on the weights. But, it was literally getting hotter by the minute. I knew it would just be too hot for me to run after weights, so I went against better judgment and hit the pavement around 8:30. I did 3, hot, sweaty miles. It was a good run despite the heat. Thankfully the humidity felt lower today and there was a nice breeze. The first 2 miles were actually fairly pleasant. It was the last one that started to get to me. When I got in, it was reading 88 degrees. I am just not accustomed to running in the heat and need to build up the endurance.

After downing water, I stretched and relaxed in front of a fan to cool down. I waited about 30-45 minutes before hitting the weights. Today I worked upper body push muscles (chest, shoulders, triceps). I did the workout in tri sets of 3 sets of 8 reps.

TS#1
Flat bench press
Shoulder press
Kickbacks

TS#2
Chest flye
Lateral raise
Lying triceps extensions

TS#3
Incline chest press
Rear delt flye
Overhead triceps extension

I will admit that I felt incredibly weak today. It was not my best weight day, and I know a huge factor was the run zapping my energy. This tri set is similar to one done in Cathe's STS Weights and it was really difficult for me. I feel like I am using shoulders and triceps the whole time...well, because you kind of do use some shoulder and triceps with chest presses I suppose. So the endurance starts to wane for me. Also, my left elbow sometimes wants to just give out - which happened today, thank goodness for my personal spotter (aka The Hubs). Anyway, I'm probably not making much sense other than this was a tough weights day for me. I had hoped to increase weights across the board and that didn't happen. I also hit total failure a few times - but I'm ok with that actually. Anyhoo....moving on.

Another Lazy Saturday
After weights I was soooo shaky. I couldn't even start typing up this post. So I had a protein shake and hit the pool for some major (much-needed) relaxing. Normally I am not a protein shake gal, but I needed the protein and vitamins ASAP.

Jason was super sweet and went to the grocery store for me while I "recovered." We were supposed to go watch the soccer game with some friends at a new bar/restaurant that opened a few weeks back. Apparently they weren't airing the game so our friends decided to move the "party" to some wings joint. I had to back out of that one. I can handle being around people eating meat to an extent, but I can't stomach the smell of places like wing joints or BBQ restaurants. The smell is just overwhelming to me. I felt really bad backing out to be honest. I don't know if meat-eaters can really understand, and I worry that they just thought I was being picky.

Any other vegetarians/vegans out there who notice the smells like that?

I pretty much spent the majority of the day outside reading or lounging in the pool. I did manage to dust and do a few loads of laundry at least. It was the least I could do right? Tonight will be pizza (making up for the lack of pizza last night of course). I have the dough started now, so it'll be a bit before it's ready. Hope you don't mind my posting sans pictures so I can continue to be lazy ;-)

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Comments

  1. i have never thought about how some eating places MEAT smells could bother vegetarians. smells in general bother me so i have NO doubts IF i was a vegetarian that the smell would bother me.

  2. I wanted pizza tonight, but we went out for a late lunch, so no pizza. I am with you on the wing and bbq places. I do go though and I take a massive thing of hummus. Heck, sometimes I take some veggies too! Glad you got some relaxing done today.

  3. Glad you had a good nice at the game and a relaxing day today. I can't do hard cardio before weights and have a good workout any longer. Though it was possible 20 years ago darn it. ;-)

The smell of meat doesn't bother me as much as the smell of things being fried or that were fried. French fries smell horrible to me though I can't tell you why. I can understand not going to the wing place, it isn't like there would be much for you on the menu.

    enjoy the pizza,
    Ali

  4. The smells don't gross me out, but the sight of people eating wings definitely does-- it did even before I went vegetarian! Ugh. Sorry you had to miss out on the group fun, but I definitely understand.

Yeah, the heat in the South is just CRAZY in the summer...not fun. :-(

I hear you on the heat! Zero fun.

  6. I'm finding it was easier to go out for a run at -20 (Celsius) with a wind chill than on a warm summer morning (mind you it's as hot here as where you are). I was also spoiled when for a few weeks back I got off early and got to run after work. Back to the groggy am run. Thanks for the inspiration. B'town is meat and potatoes, and until 2 or 3 years ago I didn't mind the smell of BBQ or burger joint, now I find it repulsive. I feel sad when I have to apologize to my friends and go home as they go off to continue their night at Mickey D’s. I totally understand where you're coming from.

  7. Lazy Saturdays are so nice sometimes! And it's funny because I often to cardio before weights. I decided I need to start switching it up though just so my body doesn't get too used to one thing!

  10. I'm not a vegetarian but I have a proble with red meat. The smell, the look, yuck! DH will order a steak every once in a blue moon and when he does I can not directly look at it. I also cringe at the smell of fried foods (disgusting).
I love your halter top....I am addicted to halter tops since last summer....they show off the arms really well ;)
Glad you had a lazy saturday but sorry you felt a bit off!
I am off to have a lazy Sunday today!

  11. lazy saturdays are so fabulous. I am not a vegetarian, but don't eat a whole lot of meat my FH goes deer hunting and will get venison made up, and the smell makes me gag and the look of it makes me gag so he only makes it when I am out of town. Fried foods definitely upset my stomach just from the smell. I would go vegetarian, but I can't give up chicken. I could live with everything else except I need it every now and again. Love your top!

    xo enjoy your sunday!

  13. Trifitmom Thanks so much for stopping by! Sometimes even going to a cookout can be really overpowering for me. Anyone sensitive to smells would understand, I'm just not sure most people think about it.

Sarena @ The Non-Dairy Queen Oh no pizza??? Sorry!! We weren't really going to be eating there, it was more about the smell for me. Oh well.

Alicia @ Vegan Epicurean Oh yes, fried smells stink too ick!

Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg Oh yes, that's definitely a gross sight for sure!

Madeline@ Greens and Jeans The only good thing about heat is pool time!

Frosty Duncan @ Hope in a Basket I think it's a meat and potato state here! LOL or BBQ and steak state ;-) Glad to hear I'm not alone.

Megan @ The Oatmeal Diaries I used to do cardio before weights but realized that if I wanted the focus to be on weights, then I needed to switch it up. I saw much better results and had better lifting days.

Averie @ Loves Veggies and Yoga My sense of smell is strong, but not nearly as bad as yours. I think I will be thankful for that LOL

Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel Oh you're my new best friend!!! You're too sweet girl.

Bela @ It's Life, Max it Out It's interesting that you as a meat eater can have those same reactions too! Love love love halter tops. Hope you're having a great Sunday!

Erica @ Fashion Meets Food Sounds like fried foods bother a few people! Ick.

Kelly @ Healthy Living with Kelly Thanks girl!!!!

Jolene @ To Be Determined Thanks girl! Hope you're having a great weekend!!

  14. I feel ya- about the run before weights..I agree that it's so much better to do them before..especially since you were running outside..it's just tooooo stinkin' hot. The heat just zaps everything out of me (& I think your right- the lack of appetite is due to the heat)
I actually know what you mean about the BBQ joint/ Wing places..even though I do eat chicken- the smell of all of the beef/ ribs/ etc. bothers me...and then seeing people eat it off the bone...YUCK.

  15. Lazy Saturdays can be such a nice chance to recharge!

I always leave my weights until after my cardio. Whoops! I really should switch it up because half the time I end up way too tired to even do weights.

I'm a vegetarian and I can't stand the smell of pepperoni and I hate when I have to prepare steak or hot dogs when I'm babysitting; I feel like a pris but it's something nauseating now.

Weights before cardio always. Otherwise it becomes cardio followed by one weight and then quit haha. I'm glad you're supporting baseball over futball! I'm world-cupped out

  17. Holly @ Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices My husband kept saying that it was likely the heat that zapped me the most. I think I totally underestimated it. Oh and soooo nasty on eating the meat off the bone. Barf.

Katherine @ What About Summer Oh I have no idea how you prepare meat! There's really no way I could touch it even. I have to admit, I didn't watch one bit of soccer.
Chelsea @ The Healthy Munchkin Oh recharging is the perfect description for a lazy Sat!! Sounds better too LOL.

  18. I understand what you mean about the meat smells. When I was pregnant the thought of meat completely grossed me out.

  19. Dawn @ Florida Coastal Cooking I've heard that smells are extremely intensified during pregnancy.

I Run to Feel Alive

Today is National Running Day . Guess what I did this morning? Cycling? Nope. Lifting? Nope. I bet you thought kickboxing right? Nope. Running? But of course! I actually sort of planned my running days this week just so I could participate this year. I didn't get to run last year and didn't even know about it the year before. But running has become such an integral part of my life and who I am, that I couldn't miss this year. Basically, I run to feel alive . It calms me, it helps me work through life, it's often a reason to get out of bed. No matter how tough a run is, it makes you feel ... period. My plan was to get in 5 miles (got in 5.5 actually). It was about 10 degrees warmer this morning and definitely more humid. That always makes for a tougher run. We decided to take a different route today. Well, it was really only a few streets over different, but still. The point is we took a different street. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. I did realize th

Vacation Day 2 - Running, Reading, Relaxing

Running This morning I woke up a bit before 7 am. Of course, we had gone to sleep by 9....on vacation no less. I had thought I might try for an outdoor run, but the temps were already a humid 83 degrees by 8 am. So, I took my run to the treadmill. I had the Food Network to keep me occupied for a pretty decent 5 mile run. Running and watching tv isn't so bad ;-) I did 3 miles, then 4 1:00 athletic intervals then finished up another mile to round it out to and even 5. After stretching and rolling (yep, brought my TriggerPoint kit ), we packed up the cooler with lunch and headed down to the beach. Not a bad way to start the day if you ask me. Beach Time & Stair Cardio We set up our little umbrella camp and proceeded to just relax. I was excited to start one of the books I brought along with me: Alice Sebold's The Almost Moon . I've read her memoir, Lucky , and her first work of fiction, The Lovely Bones . . We were out for a few hours before taking a break.
